If there is one thing I love, it is a pointless holiday that revelers celebrate by kissing random strangers and drinking weird looking beer. Does anyone know what the significance of St. Patty’s Day is? Am I wrong to assume it is somehow related to a religious celebration?
I’m german/dutch/italian, which leaves me exactly ZERO holidays with which to celebrate my heritage (unless you count Oktoberfest, which you should). So, I’m stealing St. Patty’s Day. And I’m giving it a twist, Katie-style.
Normal people celebrate with green beer. Me? I celebrate with socks. [A note about my socks: I have the World’s Largest Holiday Sock Collection. For the last, oh decade or so, my mom has been sending me little candy/sock/underwear treat packages for holidays like St. Patty’s, Valentine’s, Easter, etc. (Thanks, mom!) I usually only wear them near the holiday they represent, but when laundry day is approaching…well, anything goes.]
I can’t actually drink beer, because of the gluten thing, but back in the day…HOOOHHH-BOY. Well, not really. I am and have always been a serious lightweight (cheap date?). These days I can’t even drink a glass of wine without getting tipsy. Lori has decided that the next two weeks are “Green Weeks“. I love the color green, the green “movement”, and eating greens, ergo I love the idea, so I am stealing it. (No, not really. I asked her first.)
I have been on a serious protein smoothie kick lately. Blame it on my new VitaMix and the wonderfully, um, smooth, smoothies it makes. Blame it on Tony Horton and the rest of his P90X goons for kicking my be-hind daily. (Seriously. My ever-present hunger has been off the charts.) Whatever the recipient of the blame, I have been drinking a green protein smoothie every morning for the last week or so. In fact, the last couple days, I’ve made my smoothie before I even start my coffee. Shocking, I know.
Yesterday’s was particularly green. I threw some chia seeds, maca powder, spirulena powder, ice cubes, a couple stalks of celery, a kiwi, 1/2 a banana, vanilla extract, stevia, and a scoop of this vegan protein powder (blech…not good. Don’t buy it.) into the Vitamix. The first time I used the spirulena powder, the smoothie I made was inedible. This time, I added more fruit and maca (which I first heard about here) which I think masked the “green” taste.
Back to sock collection, I bought these for myself last weekend. I think I might wear them to my orals. I’ll take any help I can get. Any other good luck charms or superstitions that you can suggest?
I’m not even going to comment on the fact that it snowed for two days straight (15 inches) even though spring officially starts next weekend, so don’t even ask me about it. (And that comment doesn’t count.)
